WELCOME TO HIGHER GROUND WELDING & ART
Anne Alexander is a Tioga County native, creating mostly Nature-inspired metal artwork in various styles— from steel sculpture and furniture to fire pits and large wall pieces. Her media of choice is reclaimed steel taken out of scrapyards and dug out of tree-lines. She draws inspiration from observing the world in her travels, hiking in her beautiful hills, and talking with the peoples who live there.
In addition to her Professional and Art Services, she offers theoretical and hands-on welding instruction and “Make-It/Take-It” classes; backed by 3 years of teaching and 20 years of industry experience. Welding processes used are: stick, MIG, TIG, oxy-acetylene welding, and brazing. And, every so often, you may catch the Buffalo hand-crank coal forge blowing smoke for blacksmithing.
Anne earned an Associate’s Degree in welding from Penn College of Technology in 2004, and her first industry job was building boiler walls to ASME code before the plant was shut down.
After the layoff, Anne earned a B.S. in Organismal Biology from Kutztown University. Since then, she has pin-balled her career among performing agricultural research, teaching welding at two BOCES campuses in upstate NY, functioning as an environmental consult, park ranging, and working in fabrication shops. It’s this amalgam of experience that led her to the creation of Higher Ground Welding & Art, an art studio and job shop focusing on the creation of nature-inspired sculpture and sharing the trade with others! The Higher Ground workshop is a 2-bay garage in Elkland, Pennsylvania, serving the Cowanesque Valley and surrounding communities. Hours are varied, as family takes priority over established business hours. Please reach out for art/service inquiries or to schedule individual instruction! Anne lives in Nelson with her trophy husband, their two precocious children, decorative cat, and a dog that keeps them together.

I make work by hand, from welded pieces to mixed-media wooden furniture and glass inclusions to 2-dimensional art. Across all of it, I maintain an authentic voice while shaping commissioned pieces in close collaboration with others. Commissions are client-guided, with approvals at key stages. Whether the medium is metal, wood, glass, ink, or paint, the work stays purposeful.
I offer hands-on welding instruction- in the shop or on site- rooted in real-world experience. Lessons cover safety, fundamentals, and proper technique, with skills that translate directly to shop and field work. The goal is a straightforward, supportive environment where people build confidence, competence, and an understanding of the process.
I offer reliable welding repair and small to medium scale fabrication for home, farm, and recreation, with work ranging from custom shop pieces to industrial applications. I take pride in careful assessments and quality work. Limited on-site repairs available.
